An offbeat caricature featuring Oscar Wilde

A bizarre cartoon showing the hard-line minister Thomas De Witt Talmage (1832 – 1902) trying to imitate the “aesthetic” posture and gesture of Oscar Wilde. A delightfully implausible notion, since Talmage was an American clergyman who held pastorates in the Reformed Church in America and Presbyterian Church – and was one of the most prominent preachers in the United States, on a par with Henry Ward Beecher. A well-known reformer in New York City, he was often involved in crusades against vice and crime.
