18th Century Venice: Canal Dredging

Another fascinating image from the Zompini series – the Cava rii, canal dredgers. The rhyme explains how the canal is fully drained and dried out, allowing the Cava rii to dig out accumulated layers of mud (and presumably a great deal of garbage). You still see similar operations today around the city.
