Ezra Pound’s ABC of Reading

Below is a brief excerpt from Pound’s ABC of Reading, a concise statement of his literary and aesthetic ideals, first published in 1934. Once one gets used to his rather hectoring and at times fragmentary style, the book is very rewarding. It is as much about writing as it is reading. There is much to dampen the creative ardour of those who imagine that writing, especially writing poetry, is a game anyone can play.
